OUR HISTORY
OUR HISTORY
The Maxwell family has been in the building business since the late 1950’s when Joseph Maxwell took on construction work to supplement his accounting position. What he didn’t know then is that this seemingly unimportant “side job” would inspire the profession path that has become an integral part of the Maxwell family lineage.
When Joseph’s son Dennis was old enough, his father enlisted him to help. But Dennis wasn’t satisfied just being an extra set of hands on small residential jobs, so he became an apprentice as a local union No. 28 sheet-metal worker in New York City, where he assisted on a variety of projects, including the World Trade Center.
After completing his apprenticeship in 1973, Dennis rejoined his father and they formed Maxwell & Sons, with Dennis taking the lead and ambitiously mastering all of the skills of his trade—from masonry to framing to electric work and plumbing.
As the father of seven children (6 sons, 1 daughter), Dennis cultivated a reputation for building homes where function and form are prioritized in equal measure—that tenet remains at the core of his building philosophy to this day: The beauty of a home must be matched by its ability to serve and delight its inhabitants.
Just as he had been inducted into his father’s business, Dennis passed down his considerable skills to his two oldest sons—Sean and Jason—who would often accompany their father to work. In 2001, Dennis, Sean, and Jason created Shore Developments, a joint-venture company focusing on coastal residential developing in New Jersey and South Carolina.
Today, the entire family, which also includes Matthew, Michael, Nicholas, Jennifer, and Christopher, participate in the family business in an array of capacities, from operations and marketing to acquisitions. And since the company now includes more than just sons, its name has been amended to Maxwell Homes.
